The Word and the Light

“In the beginning was the Word.” Before creation dawned, Christ already was. He is no creature of time but the eternal Son. “Before Abraham was born, I am.” (John 8:58).

“And the Word was with God.” From eternity, the Son was face to face with the Father, sharing His glory. “Glorify Me… with the glory I had with You before the world existed.” (John 17:5). Proverbs whispers of Him: “I was beside Him, His delight daily.” (Proverbs 8:30).

“And the Word was God.” Not similar to God, not merely near to God, but God Himself. He forgave sins (Mark 2:5), ruled the Sabbath (Mark 2:28), and claimed Daniel’s vision of everlasting dominion (Mark 14:62). The high priest tore his robes because Jesus claimed what belongs only to God.

“All things came into being through Him.” (John 1:3) Hebrews says, “Through Him He made the world, upholding all things by His word.” (Hebrews 1:2–3). He stilled the storm with a command (Mark 4:39). Creation itself obeys Him still.

“In Him was life, and the life was the Light of mankind.” (John 1:4) Jesus declared, “I am the resurrection and the life.” (John 11:25). Isaiah foresaw: “The people walking in darkness will see a great light.” (Isaiah 9:2). Jesus fulfilled it: “I am the Light of the world.” (John 8:12).

The riddle of Proverbs is answered: “Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is His Son’s name?” (Proverbs 30:4). The answer is Christ. Eternal Word. True Light. Creator, Redeemer, and God with us.
