Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming,” says Yahweh of hosts.
In what is likely one of the most direct biblical proofs for the plurality of persons within the Godhead, look no further than this verse. Within this prophecy, we see Yahweh as the speaker describing another figure, also identified with the attributes and titles of Yahweh, having His way prepared by a messenger (John the Baptist).

Interpretation
Behold, I am going to send My messenger, – Yahweh declares He is the initiator who sends the messenger. In the New Testament, this is identified as John the Baptist (Matthew 11:10).
and he will prepare the way before Me. – The messenger prepares the way for Yahweh’s own arrival. This mirrors Isaiah 40:3, where the voice in the wilderness prepares the way for Yahweh. Note that when quoted in the Gospels, the “Me” of Malachi is often presented as the Father speaking to the Son (“Prepare Your way”), highlighting the internal dialogue of the Trinity.
And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; – The title Ha’Adon (The Sovereign) is used almost exclusively for Deity. Crucially, He comes to His temple. As the Temple is the exclusive dwelling place of Yahweh (1 Kings 8:13), the one who owns the Temple must be Yahweh.
and the messenger of the covenant,in whom you delight, – This refers to the Malak Yahweh (Angel of the Lord) who established the covenant with the Patriarchs (Genesis 22:15–18). He is not a created being, but the visible manifestation of God.
behold, He is coming,” says Yahweh of hosts. – The speaker (Yahweh) affirms that the one coming (the Messenger of the Covenant/The Lord) is synonymous with His own divine presence.
Conclusion
Malachi’s prophecy is a direct expansion of Isaiah 40:3. It identifies the coming Messiah not merely as a man, but as the “Lord of the Temple.” For any who argue that Christ is not God, this verse presents a technical and theological reality that cannot be deflected: the one whose way was prepared by John the Baptist, Jesus Christ, is the very Yahweh who claimed the Temple as His own dwelling place. Jesus is YHWH.
